Council rejects opportunity for greener town centre
At tonight's full council meeting Conservative councillors rejected a Liberal Democrat motion to increase the opportunities for greener living in Poole's regeneration areas.
The motion was put by Cllr Brooke who asked that Poole's renewable energy strategy should also explore every means possible to promote small scale energy conservation and micro-energy generation schemes, especially within the regeneration area.
Cllr Brooke said "by using all the tools at their disposal councils can bring about a step change and offer a better quality of life. We need a visionary approach and developments within individual houses can make a big difference to both energy consumption and a better environment. I was staggered to hear a Conservative Councillor suggest that because this might only enable about 10% of our needs over the next few years it is not worth pursuing. If every local authority could make a ten percent improvement this would make a considerable difference to issues of climate change. We need to see every new house fitted with solar panels and perhaps even small windmills. Emissions of carbon dioxide must be reduced."
Another motion to full Council in support of a Private Members Bill with similar aims was tabled later by Cllr. Tony Trent and was referred to the September meeting of the Environment Overview Group.
