Barclays Job Cuts
Yesterday's announcement by Barclays of over 1000 job losses has come as a great shock, and on behalf of the Liberal Democrat group on Poole Borough council would like to express our sympathies to those most affected. "It is going to be a challenging time for everyone and we will do everything we can to give support" said Cllr Mike Brooke. "I know the officers are working hard behind the scenes to ensure the impact on Poole is minimised and we hope that employment can be found for everyone."
It is difficult to assess the full impact of this on Poole but it certainly could have significant implications for the town's regeneration programme. Barclays has made immense contributions to the town since relocating here several decades ago. "Not only must the council work hard with its partners, such as Job Centre Plus and the Learning and Skills Council, to resolve the immediate employment difficulties," added new councillor Dan Martin, "but it may have to radically re-evaluate its whole approach to the future employment structure of the town".
"As uncertainty still remains over the new location for Barclays, there are significant challenges ahead for the new council and both political parties must work together for the good of the whole town" said Mike, who also believes there may have to be a radical re-evaluation of the regeneration programme if it is to achieve the employment levels currently anticipated.
